Introducing Kookaburra Sport: A Legacy of Sporting Excellence
Step into the world of Kookaburra Sport, where a rich history of athletic craftsmanship began over a century ago. In 1890, in the vibrant city of Melbourne, Alfred Grace (AG) Thompson founded Kookaburra Sport, establishing a legacy that continues to thrive to this day.
AG Thompson, a skilled saddler and harness maker from a lineage of craftsmen, brought his expertise to Kookaburra Sport. Inspired by his "pet" Kookaburra named Jacky, who resided in a peppercorn tree outside AG's residence, the iconic brand name was born.
Today, after an incredible 130 years, Kookaburra Sport remains a proud 100% Australian family-owned business. The fourth and fifth generations of the Thompson family carry the torch, working alongside a dedicated team of over 200 employees across offices in India, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and South Africa.
Kookaburra Sport, A leading sports equipment manufacturers, specializing in cricket and field hockey balls and equipment, bespoke teamwear, clothing, and footwear. Kooaburra products are cherished by athletes and enthusiasts alike in over 50 countries worldwide.
Kookaburra's reputation as a premier cricket ball manufacturer began to flourish during the First World War. Even today, the iconic Kookaburra Turf cricket ball is meticulously hand-stitched at our Australian headquarters by experienced craftsmen with a collective experience of over 80 years.
In 1956, kookaburra's journey into the world of field hockey began when a leather ball similar to a white cricket ball was used in the Olympic Games. But it was in the early 1980s that kookaburra's Research & Development Department revolutionized hockey balls with the introduction of the Kookaburra Dimple. This uniquely designed ball gained exclusive usage in international hockey from the 1984 World Cup and Los Angeles Olympic Games onwards. Today, the Kookaburra Dimple Elite remains the only hockey ball globally approved by the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
To meet the growing demand and recognition of brand, AG Thompson Pty Ltd officially adopted the trading name Kookaburra Sport in 1990. Since then, four Thompson family members have been actively involved in running the business, overseeing the production of over 650,000 cricket and hockey balls annually. As the sole cricket and hockey ball manufacturer with production facilities in Australia, Kookaburra remains committed to maintaining its heritage.
In 2002, Kookaburra further solidified its cricket ball position by acquiring Alfred Reader & Co, a prestigious British cricket ball manufacturer with a history spanning two centuries. This strategic move allowed Kookaburra to expand its influence within the English market while continuing to supply cricket balls worldwide.
In 2016, Kookaburra Sport welcomed a skilled bat maker to its Melbourne team, catering to the personalized equipment needs of elite cricket players. The Kooka Bat Cave, a hub of excitement, buzzes with activity when sponsored players visit Head Office.
Throughout their journey, Kookaburra Sport has been associated with some of the finest cricket and hockey players, gracing national and international fields.
As part of our dedication to social responsibility, Kookaburra Sport proudly sponsors and supports various community groups, events, and organizations, including The McGrath Foundation, International Women's Day, Fairbreak, Blowfly Cricket, Maddie Riewoldt's Vision, and Indigenous Cricket.
